Tomato red isn’t trending by accident. The fashion cycle has always leaned into bold color trends when things feel uncertain—look back at 2001 post-dotcom crash (Galliano red slips), or 2008 during the recession (Lanvin’s crimson sequins). Now, after years of muted pandemic-era palettes, this red is everywhere again, and not in half-measures. It’s taking the front seat.

As a color trend, tomato red hit critical mass in 2023 when Ferragamo made it their runway centerpiece and Beyoncé wore a full cherry-red Loewe look on tour. But what really pushed it past editorial into everyday style was how wearable it is. On TikTok, red tights paired with Mary Janes have become part of the coquette and balletcore revival. Offscreen, it’s crept into resale markets—Depop and Etsy saw a spike in red accessories this year, especially in vintage berets and mod knits.

When your dress brings all the structure, keep the rest simple with bare arms, soft waves, and metallic shoes that can carry the whole look without feeling overdressed.

If the dress feels bold or flirty, bring in sandals that add weight, not height. It keeps the look relaxed and works especially well for daytime.

Use Red Tights to Anchor a Playful Look

Bright hosiery can pull busy prints and bold textures together—just keep the rest of your outfit light so the color doesn’t feel heavy.

Go Short, but Keep It Sleek

For short, fitted, and skin-baring dresses like this one, add contrast with solid accessories like structured sandals, a wide cuff, or a clean shoulder bag.

Layer Reds in Different Textures and Tones

Mixing solids with subtle patterns—like plaid—adds just enough variation to keep a monochrome outfit from feeling flat or costume-like.

When the fabric moves and the cut is easy, don’t overcomplicate it. Bare sandals, lived-in curls, and no purse at all keep it from reading formal.

Use Nails as a Low-Lift Way to Join the Trend

Tomato red works surprisingly well in nail art, especially when paired with a neutral base. It adds personality without clashing with your outfit.

Make a Statement at Ground Level

If you’re committing to red, don’t skip the shoes. Bold heels with texture or embellishment can anchor a look and double as your standout piece.
